INTRODUCING VALERIA CHERCHI
I’m living in a small Sardinian village, the place I grew up to. I came back to the village after I spent four years in Rome and before I move to London this fall. Living in Rome had been very stimulating, mostly at the beginning. I am in love with Rome, but at the same time I hate it. It’s really chaotic and disorganized, people are nervous because of the traffic and the city is pretty dirty. Now, I am happy to have left it, my village is so quiet and resting, but it’s boring too. So, living here is possible just for a short period of time. I am 24, and I really hate it. I didn’t want to get older than 22. I always loved to take pictures but I started constantly with my first Yashica SRL when I was 18. I remember my first roll, it was a black and white, and it was so exciting to see it developed. The act of creating something new, maybe something good, the use of light, the curiosity and surprise to see the pictures printed are the things that I love about film: the First Love. I take pictures to remember moments, but also to create something, to show my vision. For this reason, I love to take different kind of photographs, everyday pictures, self-portraits, fashion photography. In every case I like to create a natural situation, I prefer aesthetics than concept. But I know that in a project the concept is essential. Since I started taking pictures, I am a little bit more confident in myself. I know that there is at least one thing in the world that I can control and that I’m good at. I am also more curious and I pay more attention to details and everyday moments than before. Thanks to photography I have met a lot of new people, in person and online, good and bad people; some of them now are my closest friends. Photography is humanity and learning, in one thousand different ways, it’s a fact! I have a few cameras, but I am very endeared with my first one, a Yashica Fx-3super2000. The one I use the most though, is my Canon100. This is a picture of Daniela, a flickr friend. I took it on May. She was 9 months pregnant on the shooting. I’ve never shot a future mummy before. She was so lovely and kind, and also very patient! In this picture she was posing into the sun and the strong light woke the baby up. I’m glad to have captured the baby’s first pre-born experience in the sun! I really love Sarah Bernhard work. She had been one of my first “photographic-love” on flickr. I love her vision, pure and original. Her use of light and aesthetics really influenced me. I can watch at her pictures again and again and never get bored. I would like to have her as model once!
