INTRODUCING SOPHIE VAN DER PERRE
I was born in Belgium and I moved to Amsterdam when I was 19. I love living in Amsterdam, it’s like a village, it’s small and everyone I know lives close by. And you have a lot of possibilities here. At this moment I’m 23 years old. I have been taking pictures since I was very young actually, but never took it serious. With disposable cameras I have captured moments and adventures with friends. Those are memories that I had to absolutely keep. I started taking it serious when I moved to Amsterdam and did a fashion photography course. I’m kind of a chaotic person, nothing really could keep me occupied until I shot my first polaroid with the hasselblad and fell totally in love with analog photography and portraying people. It’s the only thing that can keep me focused and bring me in a world that’s totally mine and nobody else’s. I’ve always loved looking at images and their composition. After that course, I started photographing everything, but in a different way than I was used to. I never really thought about what I wanted to achieve with my photos. I do it for myself, because I like it. The only thing I wanted, was to be in magazines. I love magazines. But everything has changed now. I grew older, now there is so much more, I want to do with photography. Especially travel the world. I just hope I’ll be able to do it my way. Analog, cause that just feels right. My life would have been different if I wasn’t a photographer, but it’s hard to say what exactly has been changed. Backstage passes maybe? Haha. Also, if I wasn’t a photographer, I wouldn’t have interned in New York and I would never have met great artists like Ryan Mcginley, Ari Marcopoulos and Cass Bird. And I probably wouldn’t have had the eager to travel the world. My favorite camera is my canon FTB, but I just bought a new camera a contax G1 wich is also very nice but a very different approach though. It’s more automatic so different to control. I really love this picture. Tara, Jus and Kristel crying. It’s one of the first pictures I took that I was proud of, cause it’s so real. It has so much emotion. It was a weird moment. We went to a festival and stayed up all night having fun. The next morning we were going home, sleepless and my friend suddenly started to cry with no particular reason. The other girls were holding her and started to cry too. It was so pure and weird at the same time. It lasted 10 minutes and then we started laughing again and having fun. I am in love with the work of Marc Borthwick. He’s my favorite of all time. Or Ed Templeton. They are a huge inspiration to me as many others. I love them both for different aspects. Marc for his creativity and Ed for the people he choses and the way he reflects them in photography.
